HONOREE
Dr. John Norwood
Nanticoke / Lenni-Lenape Tribal Leader

The Rev. Dr. J.R. Norwood has served for over twenty-seven years as the pastor of the Ujima Village Christian Church of Ewing, NJ, an independent, non-denominational, biblically grounded urban congregation. The church’s faith-based community outreach agency provides community services on a daily basis and has developed over 50 units of low and moderate income housing. Dr. Norwood is the Principal Justice of the Tribal Supreme Court of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation, for which he has also served as a Councilman for over a decade.

He is the Co-Chair of the Task Force on Federal Acknowledgment of the National Congress of American Indians and the General Secretary of the Alliance of Colonial Era Tribes. Dr. Norwood is the senior minister to the Nanticoke-Lenape Tribal Christian Prayer Circle Ministry, represents his tribe at the national and international level and has written about and lectured on tribal history, culture, and current concerns. He holds a Doctor of Ministry degree in Pastoral Care and Counseling and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Missiology.

Dr. Norwood served as Kidsbridge's academic scholar for two grants focused on Native American History in NJ-- received from the NJ Council for the Humanities.  He advised us on history, connections and new strategies useful for both grants. To quote Dr. Norwood: "The abundance and diversity of Native Americans in New Jersey help non-natives understand that natives have been here all along and are still here today".
